Broker’s Corner

Tidewater Marina is the southern Chesapeake headquarters of North Point Yacht Sales, with other offices in Annapolis and Charleston. The senior broker in Portsmouth is Peter Bass, an experienced cruising sailor, powerboater and boat builder who served as Production Manager of Hinckley Yachts in Southwest Harbor, Maine in the 70’s. Here’s this issue’s tip:

The Great Loop. If you are a cruising power boater you probably are familiar with the Great Loop Cruise, a circumnavigation of the Eastern US by way of the Erie Canal to the Great lakes and then south from Chicago via rivers and waterways to the Gulf of Mexico, then back to wherever you started in order to “cross your wake.”

So what’s the best boat for the Loop? There is no definitive answer to that question. The variety of yachts that have completed the cruise is the same as the variety you might select from for any cruise, but you need to be aware of certain parameters: air draft, water draft, speed, sea-kindliness (there’s a lot of open water), room for guests or not, fuel economy, and resale since many Loopers buy for the Loop and sell after.

Come see me if you are thinking about the Loop. I can help by asking you the right questions and add my 50 years of cruising inside, outside, and offshore.
